Fare Thee Well, Guinea Pigs; Bonjour, Sweet Whirligig

Have just fed the guinea pigs for the last time before the owners come back… and it might actually be the last time, as:

(1) the pets are getting along in years and the girl pig died before the owners left (I’m glad it wasn’t after).
(2) there’s a For Sale notice up.

Quite sad really. I normally go around lunch time but I’m not sure what time the folk get back, so today I went a little earlier. Today, like yesterday, the food bowl was still half full of grain, which worried me so much that I opened the little side door to make sure the guinea pig lurking in there was still alive and moving… which he was! Then I remembered that the owners’ son is popping in and out and might have refilled the bowl at some point. Which was a relief, but you still wonder if that’s really why.

I suppose today I had gone a bit early… normally they would have had a couple of extra hours nibbling away at the leftovers in the bowl. Perhaps on previous days when I thought they had finished it, they had just got fed up, tipped it out in the sawdust, and thrown the bowl at the door… which was usually where I found it, leaning against the wire.

They ran out of vegetables mid-week so I took more carrots and cucumber, keeping it in our fridge… I had to make two trips today as I forgot to take the carrots with me. Fortunately it’s just a quick trek round the back; they’re practically neighbours.

It was raining hard all yesterday and all last night and all this morning (I was having to skirt round inconsiderate puddles on the footpath, which stretch from one side to the other so that you have to squelch over the slippery muddy grass). I allowed Mum to do her washing and use the new whirligig on a lovely sunny day after the concrete dried, thinking I would get a go at it very soon, and then the rain came down… and down…

But the sun is back now… blue sky visible up there!! I better seize my chance.
